Thunder Bay Police Assoc Express concerns over public Safety
THUNDER BAY, ON - September 30, 2009 - The Thunder Bay Police Association would like to comment on your recent article quoting that Thunder Bay Crime Statistics are down. Our Association could not disagree more.
It is a well known fact that Thunder Bay Police have investigated six (6) homicides so far this year. The number of homicides would be higher if not for the skills of our E.M.S., doctors and medical staff at the hospital. Add to that horrific statistic, the number of vicious beatings, stabbings and domestic assaults that have occurred thus far, again will rank Thunder Bay as one of the most violent cities in Canada. That distinction is one that the Thunder Bay Police Association cannot argue. That is one distinction that this city is used to, but should not be used to. These types of crimes are extremely labour intensive and remove officers off the road for lengthy periods of time. A Domestic Assault investigation consumes most of an officer’s shift, thus one less set of boots on the ground. Recently there has been an epidemic with respect to property crime, i.e.: thefts from automobiles. read more....>

Closing of Rural Post Offices
THUNDER BAY, ON --- September 25, 2009 ---- Across our region and the country, problems with Canada Post are growing. We have two problems: threatened rural service, and urban service that is undermined by Canada Post itself. said Bruce Hyer, MPP, Thunder Bay Superior North,
Rural post offices are absolutely vital to the identity and economic stability of small communities across Canada. They provide an essential service. While there has been a “moratorium” on rural post office closure for some years, that doesn’t include places where a Postmaster retires, and Canada Post doesn’t find a replacement. If a local business has a franchised outlet, the outlet is lost if the business closes. The end result is the same. read more.....>
