Elle Andra-Warner, Travel Writer

Elle Andra-Warner is an author, journalist, columnist and photographer based in Thunder Bay, Ontario. She specializes in writing about travel, outdoor adventure, people, history and culture. Her feature articles appear in publications around the world and her books about Canadian history are best-sellers.  And she teaches writing, most recently as UCLA’s on-line guest lecturer.    

 Wanderlust combined with her passion for travel writing and photography has taken her to many destinations – from the Canadian Arctic and the Caribbean to the medieval streets of Tallinn, Barcelona and York, and kayaking in Cape Breton, British Columbia and Alberta.

Canada’s First Lighthouse and the Fortress of Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island

March 17, 2008 ~ The Louisbourg Lighthouse, site of Canada’s first lighthouse and North America’s second (The Boston Light, 1713, is the oldest). First lit in 1734, the Louisbourg light could be seen for 18 miles. The light was supplied from codfish oil in an open bronze basin (3 feet in diameter, 10 inches deep) fed through 31 pipes in a floating copper ring to the wicks which gave the flame. Not surprisingly, fire destroyed the first lantern in 1736; a second lantern was lit in 1738 and mysteriously demolished sometime before 1798. The lighthouse built in 1842, burned in 1922 and was quickly replaced.  Lake Superior News  read more....>

SAILING SUPERIOR: IN THUNDER BAY’S FRONT YARD

THUNDER BAY, ~ February 25, 2008 ~ The world’s largest freshwater lake – the awesome Lake Superior (some call it the Spirit Ocean) – is in Thunder Bay’s front yard, but the majority of us have never been on the waters past the breakwaters. We’ve travelled over it as we fly to other destinations; we’ve driven beside it, but most of us have never been ‘’on’‘ it.   And until this summer, I was part of that majority. But thanks to Sail Superior, a group of us five urban “baby boomer” adventurers booked a summer afternoon of sailing past the breakwaters to the Welcome Islands. Lake Superior News  read more.....>
