 Residents Say Pesticides are Public Health Issue

November 20, 2007 Thunder Bay Community Poll: Majority of Residents Say Pesticides are Public Health Issue.  The poll released November 20th showed Strong Support for Pesticide Bylaw.

In August 2007, the Canadian Cancer Society commissioned a city-wide public opinion survey to determine whether city residents support or oppose the idea of a bylaw restricting the cosmetic use of pesticides.

The poll was conducted by Oracle Poll Research, a national polling firm.  A total of 500 randomly selected residents of Thunder Bay were interviewed.  The margin of error is +/- 4.4%, 19/20 times.

 Results of Poll supporting a Ban on the Use of Ornamental Pesticides

Thunder Bay Residents Support a Ban on the Use of Ornamental Pesticides
 In August 2007, the Canadian Cancer Society Thunder Bay Unit commissioned Oraclepoll Research Limited, a national public opinion polling and market research organization, to conduct a community poll.
 
Methodology
This poll assessed the opinion of Thunder Bay residents on the ornamental use of pesticides using
computer-assisted techniques of telephone interviewing (CATI) and random number selection from across all Wards in the City of Thunder Bay. A total of 500 randomly selected residents 18 years of age and older were interviewed. The margin of error for this 500-person survey was +/- 4.3%, 19/20 times.

Results
75% of Thunder Bay residents view pesticide reduction as a public health issue, compared to a lesser 16% who see it as a property rights matter.rights matter.

There is strong support for a bylaw restricting the use of cosmetic pesticides from 77% of residents, compared to only 17% that would oppose one.

77% of residents agree that cosmetic pesticides pose a threat to the environment

78% of residents agree that cosmetic pesticides pose a health threat to children

78% of residents agree that cosmetic pesticides pose a threat to the health of pets

City of Thunder Bay Councillors, is asked to please consider this poll in your decision-making and respond to this public health issue with a strong by-law restricting the use of cosmetic pesticides.
