January 3, 2007 ~ Duluth During the month of December the Duluth Police Department have taken reports of wallets taken from purses while shoppers were shopping at local grocery stores. A common method used by suspects were to distract the customer while another suspect stole the wallets from purses. Victims were unaware of the thefts until they went to purchase their groceries.
On 12/28/07, A Super One Loss Prevention Officer in Super One at the Kenwood Mall recognized the same suspect who committed a theft of the wallet at another store on 12/27/07. The Loss Prevention Officer believed the suspect was working with several others to attempt to commit another theft. The Loss Prevention Officer called police and several individuals were detained.
During a search of the vehicle in which the suspect had arrived in, several stolen checks taken from thefts at various groceries stores, and other thefts were recovered. Information and surveillance video identified the main suspect who conspired with others to commit these thefts. All parties were interviewed. The suspects admitted to going to grocery stores to distract customers while another suspect stole the unsuspecting victims wallet. They would then use credit cards, and checks to make purchases in the area.
The Duluth Police has currently identified ten different victims whose property was in the possession of the suspects.
Two suspects were arrested and charged in this investigation with more charges forthcoming on the other co conspirators.
Duluth Police want to warn customers to be aware of this type of activity and to make customers aware not to leave their purses unattended or to turn away from their purses.
