Appointments Duluth Seaway Port Authority
Duluth, MN – USA – The Duluth City Council has appointed Norm Voorhees, market
development representative for Ironworkers Local 512, to the Duluth Seaway Port Authority.
Voorhees, a Duluth native, brings a strong voice for labor to the Port Authority Board of Commissioners
Governor Tim Pawlenty reappointed Cal Larson to the Duluth Seaway Port Authority, effective Jan. 5, 2009.
Larson, a native of Fergus Falls, has been a member of the Port Authority Board of Commissioners since 2003. Larson served in the Minnesota State Senate from 1987–2006, having served previously in the House of Representatives from 1967–1974

Thunder Bay Port Authority reports increased shipping at the end of the season
THUNDER BAY, ON, -- December 8, 2008 --
The number of ships in port has risen in the past two months. According to Tim Hemey C.E.O. of the Port Authority of Thunder Bay, for most of the shipping season we were looking at an average of 1.8 vessels per day arriving in port. On Monday there were ten vessels visiting our port. There has been an increase in shipping out of the city since mid November.

Tonnage Figures Through the End of October Have Just Been Released

the end of October have just been released and, looking at the big picture, shipments through the Port of Duluth-Superior were lagging just two percent behind last year’s totals, according to the Duluth Seaway Port Authority.

THUNDER BAY, ON, -- October 21, 2008 --- Our harbour has been relatively quiet this
summer with noticeably fewer boats paying a visit to Thunder Bay. Over the summer I have been told that there is a shortage of vessels and many of these ships were delivering iron ore and steel making ingredients to various ports of call around the great lakes. I was surprised when I checked the AIS page to see six ships in habour and two inbound ships. Not all of these ships come here for grain, as we might assume. Some are delivering salt from Windsor, and cement is off loaded here at the LaFarge terminal. Some boats come for high-grade low sulphur coal, used for power generation and the making of steel.

Caravans of Wind Turbines Routed through State
THUNDER BAY, ON - September 18, 2008 - Duluth, Minn., U.S.A. – Caravans of specially-
built trucks, accompanied by escort vehicles and state patrol cars have been heading out of the Port of Duluth most every morning since June, loaded with wind turbine components destined for wind energy farms across the Midwest. The pace of that movement is about to pick up as one wind energy leader, in particular, ramps up delivery schedules.

Thunder Bay as the first saltie (ocean-going vessel) of the Port’s 2008 shipping season and left on Thursday, April 10, it made Port history. For the first time in the city’s shipping history, a saltie loaded a cargo of metallurgical grade coal for trans-ocean shipment, this time to Leamington, England.

Seaway navigation season is scheduled to officially open at approximately 1:00 p.m. Thursday (April 10) with the arrival of the Hong Kong-flagged Gadwallunder the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge. A First Ship Ceremony has been scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 11, at the Duluth Seaway Port Authority.
The Gadwall will proceed to Superior’s CHS grain facility to load approximately 23,000 short tons of wheat destined for Portugal.

THUNDER BAY, ON ~ March 22, 2008 ~ The CCG Samuel Risley and the Algowood leaves Thunder Bay down bound. The Algowood is Great Lakes self-unloading bulk carrier owned by Algoma Central Corp.
For gardeners and the sentimental types, the first sign of spring might be the first flower making its way through the snow, or perhaps a robin searching for a new nesting site. But if you are a boat nerd it will be the opening of the harbour with the arrival of the Icebreaker “The Samuel Risley”.

- Montreal / Lake Ontario March 22, 2008 - 0800 hours (D.S.T.) •
- Welland Canal March 20, 2008 - 0800 hours (D.S.T.) Vessel transits will be subject to weather and ice conditions. Restrictions may apply in some areas until lighted navigation aids have been installed.
- Sault Ste. Marie Locks and Canals United States Soo Locks will open March 25.

THUNDER BAY, ON - November 20, 2008 - It has been awhile since new vessels have
been introduced to the seaway. The MV Blackie shown here loading Canola at the Viterra C terminal is the first of 16 new Chinese built vessels specifically designed to navigate the Great Lakes. The Montreal company Canfornav will operate this vessel, and they plan to have 15 more to join it soon. Like most shipping on the great lakes these days each ship tells a complex story. The vessel is owned and managed by the Greek company Navarone SA. It is flagged from Limmasol Cyprus.
