THUNDER BAY,ON - June 10,2008 - Paddling Across Big Water …
Battling headwinds as they traveled south on Lakes Winnipegosis and Manitoba, the 2008 David Thompson Brigade made their way to the Assiniboine River, and upon reaching Portage La Prairie have now completed over half of their journey to Thunder Bay. For many, paddling on the big water has been a completely new experience. The communities of the lakes showed their true spirit, welcoming and celebrating the paddlers. When the big lake weather proved too challenging, the local people pitched in together with the brigade members to keep everyone safe, dry and well-fed.
This voyage began in snow and ice on May 10, launching sixteen 25’ North Canoes from Rocky Mountain House to commemorate David Thompson, the greatest land geographer of his time. The journey of 63 days and 3300 km will conclude on July 12 at Fort William (Thunder Bay). Retracing Thompson's pathways, two hundred paddlers are traveling across the country, visiting communities along the way, where many celebrations are taking place.
This week, the brigade will be paddling through the Winnipeg area, and arriving at Lower Fort Garry in the afternoon of June 12.
At The Forks in downtown Winnipeg, Parks Canada will host the 2008 David Thompson Canoe Brigade on Wednesday, June 11th from 1 to 3 pm. This special occasion will be marked by launching David Thompson – live! a fun theatrical presentation that explores the trials and triumphs of this Canadian legend. As the brigade makes its way east, they are looking forward to celebrating with the communities of Lac Du Bonnet and Pinawa, who are also planning events.
As part of the 2008 David Thompson Bicentennial celebrations, the brigade hopes to re-kindle interest in our rich history, and the importance of the rivers that link Canadians all across the country. The many rivers and lakes of Canada each have their stories and are just waiting for Canadians to rediscover them. Join a local canoe club or contact your recreation department and ask about canoeing lessons. Celebrate David Thompson's bicentennial - and keep the adventurer's spirit alive.
