KAMINISTIQUIA RIVER SYSTEM FLOOD ADVISORY Minimize

THUNDER BAY, ON - June 12, 2008 - The Ministry of Natural Resources, Lakehead Region Conservation Authority, and Ontario Power Generation continue to monitor the high water levels currently existing on the Kaministiquia Watershed. Recent heavy rainfall has resulted in high water elevations and flows in the Kaministiquia River Watershed. Levels are beginning to decline but further rain is forecast over the next week. The ground is saturated and future rain will move very quickly into the water systems. Current water levels in Dog Lake are abnormally high. Due to current high water levels and the forecast of even more rain later this week prudent water level management measures are required now. Ontario Power Generation will be initiating a controlled release of water from Dog Lake Dam beginning Tuesday June 10 at 12:00 noon.

Please be advised that the area between Dog Lake and Kakabeka Falls along the Kaministiquia River will experience increased water levels. These levels may be similar to that experienced on Friday June 6.

Lakehead Region Conservation Authority advises that levels on the lower Kaministiquia are expected to remain high and levels may also increase.

Changing water flows and levels pose a serious threat to anyone who ventures too close. Water flows and levels can become dangerous very quickly and without notice, particularly during periods of significant rainfall.

The agencies will continue to work together to monitor the situation. Updates will be issued as warranted.
