Lake Superior News Feeds - Rainbow Falls Stay-cation
THUNDER BAY, ON. - August 4, 2008 -- For 53 summers our family has made their summer home on the shores of Whitesand Lake. Over time there have been many changes. Perhaps high gas prices factor into this, so does all the rain we have had this year. Due to the rain, the national black-fly team has set up shop in the park. Then there is the Christina Calyca disappearance, and the occasional bear or two. These are the excuses for people not to come visit. Local people know a jewel in the rough when they see it, and they are including the park in their summer plans

Lake Superior News Feeds - Group of Seven recognized as Canadian icon
THUNDER BAY, ON - June 25, 2008 - The final results won't be known until October, but the Dominion Institute closed off a survey of Canadians last week, asking all of us: "What 101 things best defines Canada?" The top 10 items on the list, a couple of days before it closed off, were: aboriginal Canadians, Canada eh, strong and free, the canoe, the Snowbirds, the Group of Seven, Canadian comedians, Anne of Green Gables, Stompin Tom Connors and CBC radio. I hope local tourism officials notice that the Group of Seven is on the list. Very few people outside the Sault know that this group painted its way to fame via boxcars up the ACR in 1918. One of those boxcars is rotting in a former mini-golf site in this city. Meanwhile one of the best-known Group of Seven collections hangs in the McMichael Gallery at Kleinburg, just northwest of Toronto. Thousands of Canadians have visited there and many think the Group began there. Both the Sault and the province of Ontario have been slow to promote this iconic group of painters that best portray this "naturally gifted" area. But CAPT (train people) have taken the lead by celebrating the Group's 90th anniversary.   read more...>
