THUNDER BAY, ON., - MAY 14, 2008 - At a lively c held last night at the Prince Arthur Hotel, members of the Liberal Party of Canada in the Thunder Bay-Superior North Electoral District chose a new President to lead the Association. Peggy Smith, an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Forestry and the Forest Environment at Lakehead University was acclaimed after opponent Eric Leat withdrew.
In her speech, Smith emphasized the importance of building a strong Association to elect Federal Liberal Candidate Don McArthur and defeat Harper’s Conservatives in the next federal election. In her speech, she said: “I am concerned that Stephen Harper is destroying the country that I love. I know that the Liberal Party is the only Party that has a hope of defeating Harper. So I want to make sure that at our local riding level, we Liberals build a campaign to defeat Harper’s government and get Don McArthur elected.”
Former President Terry Dyck spoke to the Association’s accomplishments over the past year. Membership has quadrupled, a successful candidate selection process was conducted and the Association has been working closely with Don McArthur to raise the new candidate’s profile in Thunder Bay.
Don McArthur addressed the membership, pointing to his concerns about the future of the country. “I truly fear for our future wealth and well-being should Harper’s narrow pursuit of law-and-order bills and tax cuts continue for too long. The stakes in the next election—whenever it comes—will be very high indeed.”
A constitutional amendment was also passed to make the Association Executive structure more efficient. Liberal supporters in Thunder Bay-Superior North are encouraged to renew their memberships and volunteer for the federal election campaign.
