 CanWest CanSpell Minimize

January 20, 2008 ~ Thunder Bay ~ CanWest CanSpell, The Chronicle-Journal, and Lakehead University have partnered to host The Chronicle-Journal Regional Spelling Bee:

The 2008 CanSpell program features 22 Regional Spelling Bees in communities spanning from St. John's, Newfoundland, to Victoria, British Columbia.  These events determine the 22 young Canadians who will participate in the national finals in Ottawa in April.   For the first time this year, The Chronicle-Journal, in collaboration with Lakehead University, is proud to sponsor the CanSpell program in northwestern Ontario, providing schools from Kenora to Hornepayne the opportunity to participate in this outstanding literacy initiative.

Check out the fun and games available for kids! New games will be added regularly so check back often.

CanWest CanSpell offers students in grades 4-8 (age 15 and under) the chance to take part in this free program while enjoying spelling study, fun, and celebration.  The national Spelling Bee will be held in Ottawa in April, and the champion goes on to the international event (Scripps National Spelling Bee) in Washington, D.C., in May.  Success is rewarded with special events, travel, and thousands of dollars in education funds.

CanWest CanSpell is the country's only truly National Spelling Bee competition. Launched by CanWest Global Communications Corp. in 2005, the program is part of the company's ongoing strategy to increase learning and literacy levels among Canada's youth.  Now in its fourth year, CanSpell has grown to involve all 10 provinces.  This year, approximately 250,000 young Canadians across the country will participate.
